4th of July weekend 2016
We had an awesome 3-day weekend this year for 4th of July holiday. The 4th was a Monday, so we got to extend our celebrations out over the course of three days and it felt like a mini vacation which was awesome!
Graham had a Nonnie & Gramps night on Friday, so we went to the pool with Carson and Austin (it's too challenging to go swimming in the big pool and eat dinner there with all three), so our weekend celebrations began Friday night! Then, The Colony had its celebration on Saturday, the 2nd, which worked well for us because Farmers Branch was having their celebration on Sunday, the 3rd and I really wanted to go again this year. And then, as it turns out, we had a family pool party on the 4th at Aunt Jo's house, so that made for even more fun times!
Saturday was spent in The Colony all day as is our usual. Seth mowed the lawn first thing in the morning and then we loaded up and headed north. We were there from noon to fireworks. I brought some things for a coloring contest (and the prizes were also activities for that day), water balloons, Pop Its, and some sidewalk chalk. There's always board games (Rory taught Graham how to play dominoes and I love her for it!), walking the dog, feeding the fish, running the boat in the pond, plus all the toys that they have at their house.
At one point, when there was a lull before dinner, Seth and Spencer took 3 of the 6 kids to the games/midway area that had been set up for this year. It was a new thing and they wanted to check it out. I guess it wasn't great because it got thumbs down and "not doing that again next year" comments from the two daddies. After dinner, we continued to hang out until it was time to load up and go see fireworks. Normally we see them from the front yard because they are shot off by the lake, but they changed things this year. We weren't quite sure what to expect with the parking and traffic, but we had a good spot and thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Carson didn't nap that great for his second nap, so it was SUPER surprising to us that he stayed awake the entire ride home! Can't say the same for his big brothers!
Sunday morning was church followed by naps and laziness. It was so nice to just lay on the couch with Seth and refuse to think about any of the myriad tasks I should have been accomplishing. We got up, ate dinner and headed to Farmers Branch for their event. It's music, bounce houses, tattoos, etc. The lines are all really long (I hope they change a little bit of that for next year), but we had a blast again this year and it solidified itself as probably my favorite thing we do all year. Thankfully there was a slight breeze, so we didn't have any bug problems, and though hot, it was manageable.
Graham is a future engineer or something... He played around with the glow sticks forever trying to get the configuration he wanted. He was perfectly content to just sit there working on it!
And then it was time for fireworks!

As you can see, we're super close and the boys (even Carson--again) love it.
Monday morning was the annual Park Forest parade, and this time, because of swim team, Austin got to actually be IN the parade! Because we had had two super late nights, everyone but Seth slept in which was nice, but also kinda crazy because we were cutting it close to be able to get Austin to the meet up location on time to get on the float!
It was super cloudy which made for awesome parade viewing! It was damp, but not sunny.
I didn't get any great shots of Austin in the float. (He was JUST hidden in all of my pictures.) But Seth got this awesome video. You can see/hear my friend Ashley (fellow Carson Momma) offering to bring him home afterwards.
Once the parade was done, we finished cleaning up the kitchen from breakfast, made the dessert and headed to Aunt Jo's for the family pool party! I didn't get any pictures of our time there, but the boys had an awesome time swimming and jumping and watching Doug's drone fly.
